The Kingsland Lifeline Hub opened its doors on July 10th, welcoming residents, volunteers and partners from Peter Bedford Housing Association, St Giles, Hackney Council and local VCS organisations. It marked the beginning of a new community space designed to support households facing food insecurity, social isolation and rising living costs.
Opening remarks, interactive activities and guided tours introduced visitors to the Hub’s choice‑based pantry and wraparound support model. A panel discussion challenged common misconceptions about pantry users, noting that food insecurity increasingly affects working households. With Hackney’s cost of living around 60% higher than the national average, and fuel poverty worsened by local housing conditions and EPC ratings, many residents struggle to meet essential costs despite being in employment. As one panellist highlighted, pantry users are often “people balancing high housing costs, rising energy bills and everyday essentials”.

Delivered by PBHA and St Giles, the Hub will offer affordable food, community support and volunteering opportunities. Residents can access free and low‑cost groceries weekly, alongside a wide range of proposed wraparound services:

The Hub aims to help residents stretch their budgets, build skills, and stay connected through community networks.
