Tenants on the Panel: Why It Matters

No one knows the experience of being a tenant better than our tenants themselves. That’s why we were thrilled to include Safak, one of our tenants, on a recent Peter Bedford staff recruitment panel.

Involving tenants in our hiring process helps us ensure new staff are the right fit, not just on paper, but in how they relate to the people we support.

“It gives us a window into how a candidate might build trust, listen, and connect with tenants. It’s invaluable,” says Daisy, our Hackney-based Supported Housing Co-Ordinator service manager.

Safak brought thoughtful questions, insightful reflections, and, by all accounts, a strong presence in the room.

“It was a great experience. I felt welcomed and included,” Safak said. “Daisy clearly explained the process beforehand, so I didn’t go in clueless. Naturally, I let the staff lead the technical parts, since they’ll be working closely with the new colleague. But my input as a tenant was truly valued.”

Two internal candidates were interviewed, and the decision, according to Safak, was fairly straightforward. But for him, the real value went beyond the outcome.

“Even though the final decision was clear, I was still able to offer insight from a tenant’s perspective,” he said. “More importantly, I think the process helped strengthen the relationship between tenants and Peter Bedford. That can only lead to better outcomes in the future.”

Safak also shared why tenant involvement in recruitment is so important.

“Housing officers have supported me through tough times—I know first hand how vital their role is. Being part of this process gave me the chance to highlight what really matters from the tenant side: empathy, reliability, and knowing the rules,” he said. “It meant a lot to see Peter Bedford take this seriously. Times are tough, and the best way to avoid bad situations is to prepare with the right staff. Everyone on the day was kind and helpful—it was a great step forward.”

At Peter Bedford, we’re hoping to build on this success and involve more tenants in future panels: When we say “tenant-led”, we mean it!
